Activity: Student Director of MUN Action
Expected Duration: Academic Year 2010-2011
Venue: Qatar Academy, Events, and Sri Lanka
Supervisor Name: Mrs. Brunning, Mr. Janzen
Hours: 300

Goal of the Activity:
The goal of this club is to provide support and act to make a sustainable difference on issues facing our national and international community. To promote and encouraged MUN participants and delegates to take action on global issues that they have researched and debated at our club and conferences meetings.

MUNA projects:
1. Eravur English School Sri Lanka
2. Amnesty International Club
3. Doha Debate Ushers

This year I will be running this Program. It will be my team and I who are responsible for funding the school in Sri Lanka and raising the Capital fund so that we can build a school in Sri Lanka by 2012. This will be done through 4 main fundraising events, including selling sponsor a child cards for the 170 children who attend the school, fundraising at the QMUN conference, Capital fund raising dinner, and a non-uniform day. I will be in charge of a team of 30 and we will meet every Monday lunch to organize all the events and stay on track.

I believe this project will meet all the learning outcomes because it will increase my own awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth in leadership, organization, and will get to work in an environment similar to that in which I would like to work in when I enter the work force; NGOs, the United Nations ect.

I applied to be head for this position because the school in Sri Lanka, teaches students who other wise would not have access to compete economically and globally, the skills that they need to do so; linga-franca and technology. I am passionate to be a active member in this exchange and to offer whatever I can to theses children. I am also very passionate about Debate and organizing the ushers and being a member of the Doha Debates team is a very exciting opportunity for me. I am excited to see how far we can take this project and I’m positive that it will be a successful year, for us and our sister students.

Creativity

Activity: QAMUN Chair- Advisory Panel the Question on Iraq
Venue: Qatar Academy
Supervisor Name: Mr. Janzen

Goal of the Activity:
Firstly to learn to chair and be able to harness the necessary skills to have the room of delegates, interested, participating, excited and under control. To be an expert in the Question of Iraq and to facilitate a excellent conference.

Activity Log:
5 Hours writing background guides and becoming and expert in the area
20 Hours in the conference and Chairing

Student Evaluation:
I really enjoyed Charing for a variety of reasons, firstly it was a new level of responsibility for me instead of being the delegate I was the chair I always wanted to me. I also loved that it encouraged me to find out more about the situation in Iraq and that I used utilize this responsibility and this understanding to help the delegates further understand the issue and to find solutions that they thought would be realistic, and really help solve the situation in Iraq. Because it was a small panel it involved a lot of thinking on my feet to keep everyone awake and participating, I added lots of group discussions, created smaller, sub debates and ensured that everyone was having fun but taking things seriously as I believe this is a key to a successful conference. It was also challenging because my co-chair was very negative and didn’t want to be there, so I had to try to create a good relationship with him, and as such ended up doing all chairing because he was not engaged. What was difficult was to not be frustrated and let that show in front of the delegates. It was a great experience and very important for me because I’m going to now apply to be Secretary General of MUN.

First Day of the Conference-- Very excited!

Activity: The Hague International Model United Nations
Venue: The Hague THIMUN Conference
Supervisor Name: Mr. Bowe
Hours: 50

Student Evaluation:
Being a part of the THIMUN conference was a fantastic experience! I was representing Austria on the Security Council. I worked hard to create a resolution on the Question of Palestine and Israel and to be well informed to about all the other questions on the Council, so that I could take an active part in all debates. During the conference the debates were hot, and we worked hard with other members to get our resolutions passed. Initially I thought I was going to be very intimidated but I found that if you have done your research and your confident then you will do fine. I practised my diplomacy skills as well as my debate skills. It was also very good because it was a great opportunity to observe how another conference ran and take note of positives and negatives that we could include in our conference next year. It was also a fantastic cultural experience because we got to explore The Hague and learn about the city and how it runs. I found it to be very different then what I expected, a very organized, aware society.

Action: Learning to Sail

Activity: Learning to Sail
Venue: Intercon Hotel
Supervisor Name: Simon Kearns

Goal of the Activity: Start a Completely new sport-- Learn to Sail!

Activity Log:
Every Thursday from 2:30-5 for 15 Weeks
38 hours

Student Evaluation:
I decided I wanted to learn how to sail over Summer Holiday. I loved seeing all the beautiful boats and the sailors and it was fascinated to learn how the wind was harnessed to move the boat.

I started taking sailing classes and I fell in love. It was so much fun! The worst thing that could happen was that you would end up in the water, which happened to me every class, many times! It was more physically challenging then I thought it would be, and learning to get the wind right was hard at first. I spent the first two weeks tacking and having the boat capsize! It was really hard at first but over the course of my classes I really improved.

I can now sail a boat confidently and it lead me to join the Yachting team

Why CAS?

1. "Successful completion of CAS is a requirement for the award of the IB diploma.
2. CAS provides the main opportunity to develop many of the attributes described in the IB learner profile.

CAS should involve:
• Real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes
• Personal challenge—tasks must extend the student and be achievable in scope
• Thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting
• Reflection on outcomes and personal learning.

All proposed CAS activities need to meet these four criteria.

Learning outcomes
The completion decision for the school in relation to each student is, simply, “Have these outcomes been achieved?” As a result of their CAS experience as a whole, including their reflections, there should be evidence that students have:

-Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth
-Undertaken new challenges
- Planned and initiated activities
- Worked collaboratively with others
-Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
- Engaged with issues of global importance
-Considered the ethical implications of their actions
-Developed new skills

All eight outcomes must be present for a student to complete the CAS requirement. Completion requires only that there is some evidence for every outcome."

Those are the requirements as stated and set by our school. However I believe that being creative, active and giving back even is the smallest way is not a requirement to pass school, but rather a way to live life to the fullest and to be a valuable member of our community. I have chosen to use a blog to reflect and post my CAS as I love photography and I want to be able to incorporate it into my reflections.
